Stitching two Confirmation Numbers on United

My wife and I are flying to India from America. She is SFO-EWR-BOM-EWR-ORD-SFO and I am flying ORD-EWR-BOM-EWR-ORD. Each of us have booked our tickets separately (we couldn't do it together because of different itineraries).
Now, is there a way to "stitch" our tickets together so we have one confirmation number?
The reason I want to do that is:
We are flying the EWR-BOM-EWR-ORD sections together. In case there are any cancellations or re-bookings or whatever, both of us would have the same change.
We have made sure that we have adjacent seats. We want it so that either both of us get upgraded, or neither.

No, you can't merge two confirmation numbers. However, you can call United and ask them to "link" your reservations. This means adding a note to both bookings pointing to the other, which any human making changes will hopefully notice — not a guarantee by any means, but better than nothing.

How do I combine my itineraries on United?
What you can do is call reservations at 1-800-864-8331 and ask them to link each itinerary together. The representative will simply put notes in the reservations stating that you and your family members are traveling together and to please use all courtesy when rebooking. Can we combine two PNR?
Two separate PNRs cannot be merged into one. You can bring 1-8 people into E+ (depending on your status) by calling or at the gate. So-called "linking" PNR, has no practical impact on PNRs or benefits -- usually is just a comment in one or more PNRs as a note for a human agent. Can I combine flight reservations?
Can you combine our bookings? It is not technically possible to combine two separate bookings. If you wish to make sure your friend and you are seated together, please reserve the seats in advance in Manage booking. How do I add a confirmation number to the United app?
