I am a South African citizen arriving in Delhi en route to Kathmandu and the problem is I am flying in on one airline and departing on another so I have to collect my luggage in Delhi. I am returning to Delhi after 13 days and will stay in Delhi for 3 nights.

Can I purchase 2 single entry visas for this purpose as I don't have time to apply for a multiple entry visa?

Remember to print out both Permits to show each at Indian border control (and at the flight gate if asked)

You don't need an actual visa to enter India for max 30 days, except if having entered more than twice in a calendar year.

Do I need to pick up my luggage on a connecting flight?

If your bag is tagged to your next or final destination, you may need to pick up your bags and place them on the connection drop-off belt. If it is not tagged to your next or final destination, then you will definitely need to pick up your bags and check them in for your next flight.

Do I need to collect my luggage during transit?

If the same airline is giving you a connection, then you do not require to take your check- in baggage. It is called through check-in. The airline will transfer your baggage on its own. In case your connecting flight is on different airline, then yes you will have to collect your baggage and check in again on your own.

How does luggage work with layovers?

In general, if you're on a domestic flight, once you land for your layover, you'll pass through a transfer area that will take you to the gate for your next flight without having to check in again. Your bags will automatically pass through to the next flight without you having to collect them.
