What kind of plugs can I expect on transatlantic cruise ships?

What kind of plugs can I expect on transatlantic cruise ships? - Calm ethnic woman taking refreshing drink from refrigerator in shop

When searching for cruises, there are usually descriptions of the rooms you can book but in the list of amenities there is no mention of power outlets. As spending a week or more on the sea requires to have some activities (and today we use a lot of electronic devices), I am wondering first if there are multiple plugs in the rooms, I expect at least 2 since the rooms are for 2 people.

I am also wondering what kind of plugs there are, i.e. is it the North American, UK or European plug system (or a different one) that is used? I expect that some shops will sell that on board of the cruise ship but I would prefer to be prepared.

So to sum up, are there multiple plugs in transatlantic cruise ships, and what type (North America/UK/Europe/other) are they? Or is the plug type depending on the country the ship was built in?

EDIT: As asked, let's say for example the cruise would be on the Costa Luminosa

Best Answer

It will depend on the ship. Cunard seems to have one US + one UK plug officially, and if you search around you find some more (by unplugging TV etc.), but they have tons of British customers. Other cruise ships might have US + European.

Do cruise ships have 3 prong outlets?

On all ships, each stateroom has one electric outlet located at the desk. The outlet is equipped with a 3-prong 110 volt (North America Grounded) and a 220 volt (Europe German-Style).

What kind of power strip can I take on a cruise?

You cannot bring a power strip on a cruise because the built-in surge protector is a fire risk. Alternatives include a variety of USB hubs, socket outlet hubs, and adapter hubs. Guests caught trying to bring a power strip on a cruise will have it confiscated.

Do cruise ships have outlets?

Most cruise ships supply both 110VAC and 220VAC power to cabins and public areas. In North America we use 110VAC, and these are the outlets you likely use in your cabin. On almost every cabin I've ever had however, there is at least one 220VAC outlet (Type F, as used in most of Europe) near the vanity.

Can you use a power strip on a cruise ship?

Power strips, multi plug box outlets/adaptors and extension cords (without surge protectors) are allowed on board when used with proper caution. However, if such devices are determined to pose a hazard, they will be removed and returned the last day of the cruise prior to debark.
