Restrictions on importing Cuban rum and cigars to the United States

Restrictions on importing Cuban rum and cigars to the United States - Abraham Lincoln Statue

I'm going to travel from the United States to Cuba in a month. I was also there a year ago and loved the rum. Last time, I was told at the duty free shop that passengers could purchase a maximum of 3 bottles. A salesperson said any more would be confiscated once I returned to the U.S., and in fact, they refused to sell more than 3 bottles.

I'd like to bring back rum and cigars as gifts for some friends. I've read articles suggesting that travelers are allowed to bring more products back in checked bags. However, because U.S. policies toward Cuba have been in flux lately, it's hard to know what's allowed and how much. So...

  1. What are the limits on bringing back rum and cigars?
  2. How would I have to bring the products back? For instance, do they have to be unopened and in a checked bag?
  3. Are there any other details that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance.
