My wife and 5-month-old baby are travelling to Delhi airport (DEL) on a domestic flight, with a connection to an international flight. The inbound domestic flight arrives at Terminal 3 at 11:50 PM, while the onward international flight leaves at 11:30 AM the following day.

The domestic and international flights are booked on separate tickets. However, our domestic airline (Air India) has a partnership with the international airline and can check the bags through to the final destination. Can we enter the international departure concourse with this much time difference to travel? I was thinking of booking a room in the internal airport hotel for about 9 hours as my wife doesn't want to leave the airport and go into New Delhi, but the airport hotel is on the secure side of the terminal.

Do I have to recheck bags on a connecting flight?

If your flights were booked under one ticket, your bags will be checked through to your final destination. If your flights were booked under separate tickets, you will need to collect your bags and recheck them before your connecting flight.

Do you have to go through security again for a connecting flight?

For connecting domestic flights, you almost never have to exit and reenter security, though there are some exceptions at airports where the terminals aren't all connected. For domestic-to-international connection, it's still pretty rare that you have to exit and reenter security, even if you're changing terminals.

Can we step out during layover in Delhi airport?

If it's a domestic connection, yes you can go out of airport. However in both cases, remember to return back to airport with ample time in hand. Delhi airport is fairly busy at certain times; and in case of international connection, you will have to undergo the regular immigration formalities again.

Can I get my luggage during a layover?

Normally, when layover flights are booked with the same airline, your baggage will be automatically transferred through to your final destination. However, if the two flights are with different airlines, you may have to claim and re-check your baggage during your layover.
