I am from New Zealand and hold a new Zealand passport. I have a working holiday visa for Germany starting on the 16-10-16 ending 15-10-17.

I plan on entering Germany on 19-8-16 on a 90 day tourist visa. I have flights booked for the 14-10-16 to London and returning to Germany on 16-10-16 to enter on my one year working holiday visa.

Is this possible to do this, and do I have to leave the Schengen zone for a certain period of time to re enter on my work visa (I've heard it has to be more than 24 hours)

Can I leave the Schengen Zone and come back?

If you leave the Schengen Zone, your time doesn't reset so it is really important that you keep track of how long you're in the Schengen Zone. If you're in the Schengen Zone for 90 days consecutively, you must leave after 90 days and can't return for another 90 days!

Is Schengen tourist visa multiple entry?

Schengen visas may allow for a single-entry or multiple entries. With a single-entry visa you can enter the Schengen area only once. This is indicated on the visa sticker by "01". With a visa allowing for two or multiple entries you may enter twice or several times during the validity of the visa.

How long do you have to leave the Schengen Zone before returning?

Under the terms of Schengen, non-EEA nationals cannot spend more than a total of 90 days within a total period of 180 days without a visa. Furthermore, once you've used up your quota of 90 days, you cannot return to Schengen until 90 more days have passed.

Can I enter and or exit the Schengen area via a country other than the one for which I have a visa?

As a general rule, you may cross any Schengen border with visa issued by any Schengen country. However, you should try and stick to your itinerary as filed when applying for your Schengen Visa.
