Do U.S. citizens need visa for short term stay in France?

Do U.S. citizens need visa for short term stay in France? - From below of crop person holding national flag of United States of America waving in wind on street against city river

I am confused about traveling for tourism from USA to France. I am a US citizen, currently a student and not employed for work. I would like to travel to France several times over the next few months, for perhaps 7-10 days at a time, and then return to the USA for a month, and then repeat. Do I need a visa?

(this link makes me think a US citizen does not need a visa for a short-term visit to France. Consecutive Schengen area visas from different countries?).

And if I do need a visa, I see that the short-term visa allows for 90 days within France in a 180 day period. So, does this mean I can freely travel the France for the next 6 months with the visa I initially gain, assuming I don't go over 90 days? And at which point will I need to gain another visa, to continue visiting, and will there be a delay - that is, do I have to wait a certain number of days before I can return to France?
