Can I check in storage bags (duffel bag) at airport?

Japan Airline (JAL) and I'm using their aircraft 789 for my international flight between US and Japan.

I am asking about checking in storage bag as travel luggage using Japan Airline. I am not sure that they will accept the quality of storage bags at checking counter since they are not regular duffel bag materials.

Best Answer

Check the website of your specific airline (I it's assume ANA or JAL). Most airlines will accept whatever you want to check in as long as it's within weight and size guidelines and poses no danger. For something flimsy they will waive any type of responsibility and might make you sign a waiver if you insist on checking it it at your own risk.

In general, regular duffle bags are fine for check in. But if your bag is unusual in some way, it's your problem if it gets destroyed and/or contents are lost. The airline will not take responsibility.

Can you check a storage bin as luggage?

As long as the bin is within the size of the airlines allowable limit I can't see why there would be a problem. Check with the airline. They may prefer you use actual luggage as opposed to plastic bins. They may have restrictions on what can be considered luggage so best to check.

What is allowed in checked baggage for international flights?

Checked LuggageMost airlines will allow you to check one bag and have one carry-on bag. There is normally a maximum weight limit of 50 pounds per checked bag as well as a size restriction. Can you take a storage tote on a plane?

While you can check plastic totes, the problem is they tend to crack and/or shatter so they are really not good for checking as baggage. I'd recommend cardboard boxes over plastic totes if you can switch. Either way you would need to wrap with plenty of tape to keep them sealed up. They would not need to be clear.

Do you have to check bags on international flights?

If you're connecting in the U.S., they require everyone from international flights to re-check their baggage upon the first landing point.
