Biking on via Appia Antica

Biking on via Appia Antica - Free stock photo of action, bike, biker

I'm going to stay in Rome for a few days and I would like to have a bike trip on via Appia Antica one day. I do not intend to have a tour, just rent a bike and ride on my own for a couple of hours.

What I need to find out is where can I find a bike rental service nearby and how do I get to the place from Ponte Sisto by public transport.

Thank you for information.

I'm sure that the number of bike rentals in Rome is limited.

I had a very good experience with this outfit:

They start their bike tours next to a bike rental place that rents out good bikes:

Can you cycle Via Appia?

The Via Appia became one of the most important trade routes in Italy and the Roman Empire. It was no coincidence that she was nicknamed Regina Viarum, "Queen of the Streets", back in antiquity. You can ride the Via Appia so reasonably well with the bike.

How many miles long was the Via Appia?

The Appian Way or Via Appia Antica in Rome is one of the most famous ancient roads. It was built in 312 B.C. by Appius Claudius Caecus. In it's entirety it spanned 350 miles(563kms). The Appian Way stretched from the Roman Forum to modern day Brindisi.

Is the Via Appia still used today?

Also known as the Appian Way, the Via Appia is one of the most ancient roads still in existence today and is a must-see when in Italy.

How long does it take to walk the Via Appia?

Depending on how long you plan to spend walking down Appian Way, you can expect to be there for at least 1-2 hours in the area. Some people go even further than usual, and longer trips can last 3 hours or more.

I used an app (not sure if I can name it here! "Citymapper") to get around Rome though I know Rome quite well. It will help you to find the best public transport options there to get from Ponté sisto to the Appian Way. You buy tickets for buses in "Tabacchi" for 1,5 Euros each, and they are good for 100 minutes (you can change buses or from buses to Metro or vice -versa). Uber X does not exist there. You can easily rent a bike in center city and ride to the beginning of the Appian Way. Enjoy!
