Baggage check through Johannesburg

Baggage check through Johannesburg - Worried young businesswoman with suitcase hurrying on flight on urban background

I will be flying to Windhoek from Dublin through Johannesburg in August with British Airways. We are flying Comair to Windhoek. Will I need to collect my bag and recheck it again?

Best Answer

Windhoek is an international connection. According to this post:

If the bags are not tagged through, you will have to pick them up, clear customs, and recheck them.

If the bags are tagged through, you don't have to collect them, but you should verify the tag numbers with the connecting airline; if you don't, the bags will not be loaded. However, the post suggests that if you have enough time, it is safer to take the bags through customs and recheck them instead.

Do I have to pick up my bags on a connecting flight international?

If you're connecting in the U.S., they require everyone from international flights to re-check their baggage upon the first landing point.

Do you have to collect your checked bags if you are connecting?

It depends on how your ticket was booked. If your flights were booked under one ticket, your bags will be checked through to your final destination. If your flights were booked under separate tickets, you will need to collect your bags and recheck them before your connecting flight.

Can I check-in luggage during transit?

That depends. If you booked the flights together at the same time, luggage will usually be "checked through" to your final destination. If you booked them separately, especially if it's different airlines, you'll probably have to pick up your luggage and check it in again.

Do I need to collect my luggage during transit?

If the same airline is giving you a connection, then you do not require to take your check- in baggage. It is called through check-in. The airline will transfer your baggage on its own. In case your connecting flight is on different airline, then yes you will have to collect your baggage and check in again on your own.
