I have 2 separate tickets. flying from Chicago to Munich on United, 2 1/2 hour layover and then flying to Larnaca, Cyprus on Lufthansa. Can I check my bags all the way through, or will I need to get my bags in Munich, go through customs and check in again. If I can get my bags checked through, do I need to go through customs still?

Best Answer

United and Lufthansa are both Star Alliance, so checking the bags through should be no problem, simply ask for it when checking in at O'Hare.

Cyprus is not in Schengen, so you will not have to enter the Schengen area in Munich. You can stay airside in Munich und transfer to the Lufthansa flight directly. No need for customs or immigration.

Immigration and customs will happen in Larnaca.

Do you have to go through customs in Munich for a connecting flight?

Re: Customs? -connecting flight? In Europe, Customs generally takes no time at all, apart from waiting for your luggage. Usually, you just walk through a door labelled "Nothing to declare". But at your first stop (Munich), you have to go through Immigration (Passport Control) and this may not be quick.

Is 1 hour transit time enough in Munich?

While Munich airport guidelines indicate a minimum time of 40 minutes to make a connection, a better option is to choose itineraries with a layover of at least 60 to 75 minutes to account for any flight delays or if you are flying outside of the same air alliance.
