This is my first time travelling to London and I'm very confused by the travel infrastructure here. When I landed at Heathrow, I bought a 7 day Oyster card for Zone 1-2 and I was charged £43 for it. After I took my journey to Central London and I saw the balance, it said that it had deduced £1.5 and my remaining balance was just £3.5.

Where did the rest of my £38 go?

Can Oyster card have negative balance?

All Oyster card balances, both positive and negative, stay forever until the customer cancels the card. This is unlike most other cities in the world where balances expire after a set period. A card with a negative balance may only be reused once it is topped up.

Does Oyster card come with credit?

When you buy a London Pass, you have the option to add a Visitor Oyster card, which comes preloaded with a set amount of credit depending on the length of London Pass you choose. You can then reload it with credit as needed. London passes with a Visitor Oyster card can only be purchased online.

How do I know how much credit is on my Oyster card?

You can find out how much money you've got on an Oyster card at ticket machines by holding your card against the yellow Oyster card reader. Or you can check your balance anytime online if you register your Oyster card and have an account. If you haven't already you can do that on the TfL website.

Do you lose money on Oyster card?

There's little reason you would ever need the 1-Day Travelcard as there is already a cap on Oyster Cards which limits the amount you can be charged per day. In fact, you will likely lose money if you choose the 1-Day Travelcard over a regular Oyster.
