I am wanting to see the Dead Sea. Is there anywhere safe/nice to stay on the Israeli/Palestinian side of the sea?

Travel guides I have read recommend travelling from Jerusalem but its circa 40km away and requires getting up at 3.30am. Is it worth staying closer to the sea for a day or two?

My friends visited Neve Zohar (map, possible accommodation) last year and were very pleased with it. Also there are more zimmers (this name for "hostel" in Israel, it is German word, it means "room") accross the Dead sea, you can easily find them.

Where should I stay when visiting the Dead Sea?

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Dead Sea Resort & Spa and we absolutely loved it. The other main options for the Dead Sea are Hilton Dead Sea Resort, the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar, the Dead Sea Marriott Resort & Spa and the M\xf6venpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea.

How many days do you need in Dead Sea?

We personally believe that you should allocate at least two days for the Dead Sea region. And if you want to spend an entire day lazing around on the beach, then make it three. However, if you're short on time, then know that you can see Masada, Ein Gedi and swim in Ein Bokek in a day.

Is it worth staying at the Dead Sea?

Dead Sea is actually a gigantic lake that spreads over miles. It's definitely worth going considering it's below sea level and the lowest part yada yada yada ... It's nice that there aren't droves of people going and it's generally isolated.

What cities are near the Dead Sea?

There are several small communities near the Dead Sea. These include Ein Gedi, Neve Zohar and the Israeli settlements in the Megilot Regional Council: Kalya, Mitzpe Shalem and Avnat. There is a nature preserve at Ein Gedi, and several Dead Sea hotels are located on the southwest end at Ein Bokek near Neve Zohar.

If you are planning on visiting/climbing Masada, it is in a convenient location close to the Dead Sea. There is a great, relatively new hostel at the foot of Masada connected to the cable car. It's about half-way between the Dead Sea resorts of Ein Gedi and Ein Bokek (~15 minute drive from each). There is something to be said about staying at a hotel actually on the sea, though. The benefit of staying on the sea itself is that you will have access to a private bathroom and shower, which is very nice given the salinity of the water. Ein Bokek in particular has a number of beachfront restaurants that also have shower and changing facilities for which you can buy a pass.
