Imagine that my bag is not well closed or simply old, and breaks and spills its contents while being loaded on or off the plane (or a container).

What do they do with it? Do they pick everything up and throw it away? Do they collect my belongings and try to return them to me? Would the tell me what happened or just tell me it got lost? Would I get a fine for using an inappropriate suitcase?

What happens if TSA breaks your bag?

TSA has a formal claim process for lost or damaged property caused during screening process. The claim can be submitted by email to TSAClaimsOffice@tsa.dhs.gov along with supporting evidence and can take up to six months for the TSA to investigate.

While the airlines avoid opening items, airport security, TSA in the US for example, absolutely can open and search any of your belongs at any time without informing you in advance. TSA, for example, is supposed to place a Notice of Inspection in the bag if it has been inspected.

Inspection Notices: TSA may inspect your checked baggage during the screening process. If your property is physically inspected, TSA will place a notice of baggage inspection inside your bag. This is to inform you that an officer conducted an inspection of your property.

Are airports responsible for damaged luggage?
