Places for camping without a caravan in UK

Places for camping without a caravan in UK - Man with Tattoos Giving Shower to His Son in front of the Caravan

I stay in Bristol and would like to go for camping for couple of days or more on my own preferably in lake district or cornwall; but I don't have a caravan with me. I do have a reliable car, tent, sleeping bag and other things necessary for camping. I just don't know where I can park my car and layout the folding tent to spend a night. I mean can I just park up in open space/ ground on road side? I've never been to cornwall or lake district but have heard the roads over there are pretty narrow. has anyone ever tried something like this before? Please advice.
