I have a flight from JFK to SVO, then an hour layover before continuing from SVO to TLL (Tallinn) on the same airline. I've flown into an EU country before, but never non-EU then EU.

Will I have to recheck my bags at Moscow?

Will I have to go through Customs in Moscow even if I'm not staying there?

Best Answer

You don't need to pick up your baggage or clear immigration and customs in SVO. Your airline will transfer your baggage to the next flight for you. When you check in at JFK, you will see that they will check the bags all the way through to TLL. And unlike the US, in most countries and in most circumstances it's unnecessary to clear immigration and customs to transfer flights when you are simply transiting one country on the way to another country.

You generally should receive boarding passes for both of your flights when you check in at JFK. If for some reason you don't, then you can pick up the second boarding pass at your airline's transfer desk at SVO. If you need to do this, ask a staff member of your airline for directions when you exit the plane at SVO.

Do you have to recheck baggage on international layover?

When you purchase a layover flight, you will need to claim your bags when you land at your layover destination, and recheck them the next day when you continue your flight(s).

Do I have to recheck my luggage on a connecting flight?

If your flights were booked under one ticket, your bags will be checked through to your final destination. If your flights were booked under separate tickets, you will need to collect your bags and recheck them before your connecting flight.

Do you go through customs when connecting?

Transit Security vs. Customs. In almost all cases, if your bags are checked through to your final destination and you already have your onward boarding pass, you'll go through transit security when you land at your connecting airport instead of customs.

Do you go through customs twice on connecting flights?

You only go through once. If you connect through another country, you will just have to go through security and not customs. Incorrect, it all depends on the country and the airlines you're traveling with. Remember customs and immigration are different things and in some cases you'll clear then in different airports.
