Miss my flight on purpose to get 24h layover at connecting city [duplicate]
At the end of this month I have a flight from St. Lucia to New York and then New York to Phoenix where I live. There is a 24 hour layover in New York so I figured I would stay an extra day.
In order to change my flight and cancel the existing reservation to change it was about $500. I could book with a separate airline and it will cost a fourth of that. My question is:
If I miss my flight from New York to Phoenix and take a flight with a different airline, will I be OK?

Since you have a 24 hour layover, there should be no real issues with missing the flight, you would simply be listed as a no show on the next day's NY to Phoenix flight and the airline pockets the fare.

What happens if I intentionally miss my connecting flight?
Your bags won't go to your final destination without you, they will be offloaded when you 'no show' for your flight. As USBT says, your airline will have your bags, and if they think you've intentionally done this to save money they will probably ask for the difference in fare. What happens if you miss the layover?
If you missed your connecting flight due to a short layover, the airline will book you on the next flight free of charge as long as the connecting flight is part of the same ticket. Is there a fee for missing a flight?
Can I get charged for missing a flight? Most airlines only charge a fee for missing a flight if the passenger seems to have a habit of doing it purposely, commonly known as skiplagging, in which a passenger books a ticket with no intention of taking the secondary legs of a trip in order to secure a cheaper fare.A Basic Guide to Layovers
