Alaska Airlines have an exception to standard baggage charges for the following item: Pineapple from Hawaii - one properly packaged box of pineapples when traveling within the United States from Honolulu (HNL), Kona (KOA), Maui (OGG), or Kauai (LIH)

What does such a box of pineapples look like? Does that only mean that they should not fall out of the box while transported, or are there specific requirements that a properly packaged box must meet?

For export purpose the pineapples are packed into fibreboard or wood containers. The fruits are placed vertically or horizontally in container. The interspace between the fruits should be filled with straw and firm lining all around the container. For long-distance transportation, fruits are held at 7\xb0C for 10-20 days.

If you are bringing them in your carry-on you will pass through a USDA screening station after you go through TSA security. In some cases, the USDA screening station might be adjacent to your gate.

At room temperature \u2013 a ripe one will keep for around 3 days. Whole pineapples shouldn't be stored in the fridge \u2013 but once the flesh has been peeled and chopped it's fine to chill it, stored in an airtight container.
