Facilities around the Loony Dook

Facilities around the Loony Dook - Slim waving hair in blue water of resort pool

We are a group of Germans travelling to Edinburgh for New Year's. We're taking part in the Loony Dook and we're wondering about facilities around the event.

Our number-one question is: where do you change afterwards? Are there changing rooms close to the event? Do you just change on the street (or throw some warm clothes on)? Is it ok to go to the next café/pub/restaurant and use their bathroom? Are lockers provided to store your warm clothing while taking a dip in the water?

I feel like there must be hundreds of people with similar demands, so there's probably a concept, but I can't find anything about it. Has anyone of you participated before? Do you know how things are managed?

Thanks for any comments.

Where is the Loony Dook held?

A more recent Hogmanay tradition is the Loony Dook, an annual event held on New Year's Day, in which people (often in fancy dress) wade into the the freezing waters of the Firth of Forth at South Queensferry, against the backdrop of the Forth bridge.

Why do people Loony Dook?

History. The event was conceived in 1986 as a joking suggestion by three locals for a New Year's Day hangover cure. The following year it was decided to repeat the event for charity. After a few years of only local significance, the event gradually grew in the 1990s, both in popularity and number of participants.

Is Loony Dook Cancelled?

Sadly, it has just been confirmed that The Loony Dook 2022, along with all of Edinburgh's Hogmanay programme, has been cancelled. Underbelly will be in contact with all who have booked tickets.

What time is the Loony Dook?

What is this? As a general rule if you are planning for future years, the Loony Dook takes place every year on the first day of the year (1st January). The time depends on the tide, but it usually takes place 2-3 hours before high tide when the tide is on its way in, which makes it a safer event.
