EU Healthcare for an EU citizen living in the UK

EU Healthcare for an EU citizen living in the UK - Appetizing ripe raspberries and blueberries in bowl

I am an italian citizen, but my residence is in the United Kingdom since 2016. I currently hold an EHIC card from Italy (which might not be "valid" anymore), and an EHIC card from the NHS (my current healthcare provider).

In the event of a no-deal Brexit, UK citizens wouldn't have access to free healthcare in EU countries as they currently do, and they would need to travel with a health insurance (just as any other non-EU citizen).

I was wondering: would that apply for me as well? While an italian citizen (so an EU citizen), I would be a resident of a non-EU country. I would be covered in Italy because of how the italian system specifically deals with italians living abroad that temporarily visit. But if (hypothetically) I travel to France and I need urgent care in a hospital, would I get it for free? And how exactly?

Do EU citizens get free healthcare?

Nearly all European countries have a universal health care system. Though some people refer to it as Europe's "free health care" system, in reality, it's not really free.

Do EU citizens get free healthcare in Europe?

As an EU citizen, if you unexpectedly fall ill during a temporary stay in another EU country - whether on holiday, a business trip or studying abroad - you are entitled to any medical treatment that can't wait until you get home. You have the same rights to health care as people insured in the country you are in.

Can EU citizens get healthcare in other EU countries?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to access public healthcare in another EU/EEA state for free or at a reduced rate. You can use it when you are travelling abroad or when you are staying temporarily in another EU State.
