I was flying with Ryanair last month and wanted to take some vitamin pills while on board. I went down to the end of the plane and asked for a glass of water, but the stewardess refused. Since the only other option was to buy a 3EUR bottle, I've decided to take the pills later.

Is there some EU law which obligates airlines to provide water while on board? What about if someone needs water to take their medicine?

Do airlines provide water?

Airlines are required to provide safe drinking water for passengers and crew because of the Aircraft Drinking Water Rule, a federal government policy which dates back to 2011. The airlines were given "water health scores" ranging from a 5 (the highest score) to a 0 (the lowest).

Why do airlines not allow water?

Testing found the presence of microorganisms in the water, including the total coliform bacteria. Their presence in drinking water indicates that disease-causing pathogens could be there as well. Researchers advise airline passengers to never drink water aboard an airplane unless it's sealed in a bottle.

Does Ryanair have free water?

If a Ryanair cabin crew member is thirsty during a flight, the airline does not make free water available to them. If they want to drink, they must buy a bottle, like all passengers.
