What is the difference between regular IATA number and IATA TIDS? - Collection of banknotes with dollar bill on top

I am a software developer and trying to understand the aviation domain because I see some very interesting opportunities after seeing airlines adopting NDC standard for their distribution.

I am trying to understand the difference between an IATA number and IATA TIDS number which is issued by IATA which is also used for identifying travel agents globally. As far as I know that an agency has to pay very huge amount of guarantees to IATA to get an IATA number, but IATA TIDS is free of cost. What is the difference between them and what are the benefits of IATA which are not included in TIDS?

Thanks

What is a Tids agent?

What is TIDS? TIDS (Travel Industry Designator Service) is an IATA program that provides travel agents and sales intermediaries with a unique Industry Code: The IATA/TIDS Numeric Code. This unique Industry Code facilitates the identification of travel sellers and their bookings in reservation systems worldwide.

What is your IATA number?

Purpose of an IATA Number IATA simplifies worldwide business relationships between certified agents and airlines. A travel agent with full IATA accreditation receives a unique numerical identifier code that authorizes the sale of international and/or domestic airline tickets.

Do I need an IATA number?

In order to book from IATA, the travel agent must get registered with IATA as an IATA travel agent. However, it is also possible to buy and sell tickets without getting affiliated with IATA. All travel agents who do so are known as non-IATA/independent travel agents.

What is the difference between IATA and non IATA?

IATA is considered to be one of the most basic resources for a travel agent because most airline bookings are done through the IATA portal. Non\u2013IATA as the name suggests, non-IATA/independent travel agents are agents who are not accredited by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
