Using a return ticket as a one way ticket to Mexico from the UK? [duplicate]

Using a return ticket as a one way ticket to Mexico from the UK? [duplicate] - Content couple using ticket machine in underground

My boyfriend will buy two return tickets in Mexico to travel to the UK. One for him to travel to the UK and back to Mexico, and one for me (I am already in the UK) to travel to Mexico. Is it possible for me to use the return ticket that he buys me as a one way, or am I not allowed to do that because I haven't actually come from Mexico to the UK and back to Mexico again? Am I able to travel to Mexico from the UK (on the return ticket that my boyfriend bought for me, using it as a one way ticket) if I haven't actually flown from Mexico on it?

Best Answer

As a general rule, you will not be able to travel on the return ticket without taking the outgoing flight. Pretty much all airlines will cancel the entire ticket if you miss the first leg. Some airlines may make exceptions, but it's very rare and is considered on a case by case basis and is usually allowed in exceptional circumstances. You really do need to buy a one-way ticket from UK to Mexico.

The only notable exception to this rule is the no-frills budget airlines, which don't really sell return tickets but rather a pair of one-way tickets.

Can I enter Mexico on a one-way ticket?

So the real answer is NO, you don't need an onward ticket. The immigration entering Mexico is quite relaxed. I've never had a problem entering and getting my 180-day tourist visa on arrival. I've been doing it for 4 years.

Can you enter a country with a one-way ticket?

They want to see proof of onward travel back to your home or at least to another destination. So while you can technically travel on a one-way ticket, they also need some kind of official return ticket confirmation showing that you are leaving the country eventually.

What happens if I buy a round-trip ticket and only use one-way?

Can I buy a roundtrip ticket for a one-way trip? Technically, you can buy a roundtrip ticket and only use it to go one-way, but airlines frown upon this. And, you can only skip the return flight. If you miss a segment of your trip, the airline may cancel the rest of your ticket without giving you a refund.

Do I need proof of onward travel for Mexico?

While the Mexican authorities will almost certainly not ask for any proof of onward travel, the airline might, and to make matters worse enforcement is not always consistent. You should be prepared to show something. Not necessarily proof that you will leave Mexico but that you are going home eventually is enough.

Why booking one-way flights is SO much better
