US visa about to expire - should I renew it before my next trip?

US visa about to expire - should I renew it before my next trip? - Low angle of road sign with Route 66 End of the Trail inscription located near fast food restaurant against cloudy evening sky on Santa Monica Beach

I'm an academic living in the Netherlands, originally from Palestine/Israel. In a couple of months I'll visit the US to attend an academic conference. Being an Israeli citizen, I need a visa to enter the US - and I have one, issued almost ten years ago and expiring a month after conference date; so - I can use it this time, but next time I won't have it. The visa is a B1/B2-class, type R.

My question:

  • Is it possible to renew / extend / get a new visa to enter the US based on my current conference invitation, even though I already have a valid one?
  • If so, is it a good idea to do this now, or should I just let my current visa expire and worry about it next time?

A visa must be valid at the time a traveler seeks admission to the United States, but the expiration date of the visa (validity period/length of time the visa can be used) has no relation to the length of time a temporary visitor may be authorized by the Department of Homeland Security to remain in the United States.

Can I still travel 2 weeks to my US visa expiration date?

You can legally stay in the United States until the expiration of your authorized period of stay. However, you will not be able to travel to the United States Port of Entry to seek a new admission unless your visa has been renewed by the American Embassy in your country of Nationality.
