Are Visa/Mastercard/AmEx (UK issued) widely accepted in Switzerland? Can I buy train tickets using those cards? How popular is card usage, aka. is it necessary to carry cash?

I know in Germany there is a problem with non-Germany issued cards (EC-Karten?), so I suspect there might be a similar situation in Switzerland.
