I asked a question a while back about Russian visas. I have a follow up!

Are the dates on the invitation and visa a range, and not the exact dates of travel? I.e. if I applied for my invitation and visa with dates that covered the dates I expected to travel, with a good few spare at either end, would this be ok when entering the country?

Also: do people generally book their flights before applying for their visa?

How far in advance should I apply for a Russian visa?

You can apply for a tourist visa at a Russian consulate not earlier than 90 days before your requested visa start date. It is not recommended to apply more than 6 months in advance, as some consulates may have issues with visa support letters which are older than 6 months.
