Self Guided Northern Lights Tour

Self Guided Northern Lights Tour - Aurora Borealis and Sun Visible in Sky of Northern Norway

I'm going to Iceland this December with the hopes of catching the Northern Lights. We were considering doing a tour, but we were considering renting a car and drive around hunting for them ourselves. Potentially we could follow some of the buses too.

The main reason is, we have enough people to fill a car, so it would likely be cheaper than going on a tour bus. And also it gives us more flexibility, i.e. we can choose when to go and when to leave.

However, I'm unsure if this is possible, and how hard is it to look for the Northern Lights? Is it as easy as driving out far from the city? Are the tours worth it? Have people had problems where, the tours end too early?

Is a Northern Lights tour worth it?

Northern Lights tours are great because the tour operators have been chasing the Northern Lights for years and can find the best spots for potential viewing even when there is low hanging cloud cover. Most tour operators will even offer for you to join a tour the next evening if you don't see the Northern Lights.

How do I plan a trip to the Northern Lights?

Some things to consider when planning a trip to see the Aurora borealis include:
  • They are visible between September and April.
  • Pick a night that is as dark as possible. ...
  • Get as far away from a city as possible, as light pollution impacts the view.
  • The night should be clear, with little to no cloud cover.

  • Can you drive to the Northern Lights?
