Motorcycle survival in San Francisco

Motorcycle survival in San Francisco - Person Riding Cruiser Motorcycle

I am visiting San Francisco and I find that renting electric scooters (🛵 not 🛴) is my only practical means of getting around the city. However, since motorcycles have something of a reputation when it comes to safety, and also given the density of traffic in the city, I would like to be as safe as possible. What can I do to be a safer rider? I have already completed the required minimum training and I obey all traffic laws.

I am working and therefore would often have to commute in rush hour, so unfortunately avoiding peak times completely is not an option. I can take some steps such as not splitting lanes to gain some safety at the expense of a longer commute. That would be fine, I could just leave earlier.

I am an experienced driver and bicyclist, but I have no experience with scooters or motorcycles. Specifically, the scooters I am planning to use are electric and limited to 35 mph by the providing company.
