Mobile phones must be turned off while the plane is being refueled? - Black Android Smartphone at 10:29

Twice in the past week I've been on a flight where they've told us to turn off our phones because the plane is being refueled.

This same airline let us watch movies on our phones in flight mode during take-off and landing, so they're certainly not fussy about that phase of the flight. We were told we could even use our phones once landed and taxiing.

However, we were then told to turn them off once the refueling started, and to keep them off while on the tarmac.

I assume it can't be a distraction-thing, so what's the reason? Some weird frequency/power interference with fuel pumps??

Why do we need to turn off your phone when the airline is flying?

FCC regulations ban the use of cell phones on planes in order to "protect against radio interference to cell phone networks on the ground." Meaning at 40,000 feet in the air, active cell phones would be picking up service from multiple cell towers on the ground.

Is it necessary to switch off mobile phones in an airplane?

We are warned that cellular service must be turned off because device transmissions interfere with the aircraft's navigational equipment.
