It is cheaper to buy the whole trip or leg by leg?

I am wondering what is my best option. I am planning a trip to Rio and then to Hong Kong.

The thing is that my dates are flexible so if there is not a huge difference I prefer to go to Rio and stay there as long as I wish and then move to Hong Kong.

When I test my itinerary using Kayak and using the exact same dates I got a cheaper option buying leg by leg than using multi-city as my option which sounds good to me.

As I will pay someone to buy me the tickets (and I can't ask them to check both without paying for both option) I would like to know if anyone has any experience with a similar question to give me some tips.

Is it cheaper to buy round trip or one-way?

It can be cheaper When traveling within the U.S., airlines typically price one-way flights at exactly half the cost of a round-trip. There certainly are exceptions, especially for those that fly out of smaller, regional airports.

Can I use one leg of a round trip ticket?

It is a rule on all airlines that you must fly ALL legs of your round trip ticket in order. If you skip the first leg the 2nd one will be canceled! This will happen on all airlines. Your choices are to either buy a completely new ticket, fly as booked, or pay the change fees.

What happens if I buy a round trip ticket and only use one-way?

Can I buy a roundtrip ticket for a one-way trip? Technically, you can buy a roundtrip ticket and only use it to go one-way, but airlines frown upon this. And, you can only skip the return flight. If you miss a segment of your trip, the airline may cancel the rest of your ticket without giving you a refund.
