After reading UK Citizen flying to US, then Canada, then back to UK - How does this affect Visa Waiver Program? I am wondering:

  1. If you are in the US, travel to Canada and re-enter your VWP clock didn't reset. This is classic.

  2. There are countries, in particular in Central America where a brief visit does count as a "reset".

  3. So what happens if you go USA-Canada-reset country-Canada-USA?

Does going to Canada reset ESTA?

Where must you travel to in order to before returning on an ESTA to get a new 90 days? You must leave the whole North American region completely to reset this. You can't just pop to Canada or Mexico to try and reset the 90-day counter.

Can you enter the US multiple times on an ESTA?

There is no limit on the number of times you may enter the U.S. under either ESTA of a visa. However, if reentering the U.S. using ESTA soon after staying for nearly 90 days, you can expect to be questioned in detail by the immigration officer about the purpose of your visit.

Can you extend VWP?

VWP travelers are not permitted to change or extend their temporary immigration status. The only mechanism to request a longer VWP stay requires an emergency which prevents a timely departure from the United States. In that case, the Department of Homeland Security can grant a 30-day period of Satisfactory Departure.

How long do you have to leave the US before returning?

There is no set period you must remain outside the USA before returning but: "When traveling to the U.S. with the approved ESTA, you may only stay for up to 90 days at a time - and there should be a reasonable amount of time between visits so that the CBP Officer does not think you are trying to live here.
