How can I ensure that two passengers with separate bookings on Ryanair sit together?
I made two separate bookings with Ryanair for me and a friend (they travel A->B->A, whereas I travel only the B->A leg together with them). I did not include any extras during booking, such as the "plus" tariffs, seat selection or luggage for what it matters.
We would like to sit together during the flight we share. What is the cheapest way to ensure we can sit together? (I.e. I am willing to pay for the minimum amount of seat reservations necessary).
A sure solution would be to make seat reservations now during online check-in for both of us. However I also thought about checking in for the friend first and then me paying for choosing a seat next to them - however then I see a risk that they would be placed in a seat that is surrounded by taken seats already.
Any insights?

You don't want to pay to choose. So, you both will get one seat assigned to you. RyanAir won't give you something for free when they regularly charge for it. That's really something RyanAir won't do.
Your best chance is, once in the plane, to ask someone politely whether they could change seats with you.
