I have an ESTA which will expire on the 27th of September. As I fly to the US on the 26th of September, do I get a new one? I am an Australian resident.

It is ok if your ESTA application expires during your trip, but it must be valid when you enter the US. Depending on exactly when your flight arrives in the US, that may or may not be a problem.

Since it lasts for two years and costs $14 USD, I would find it worthwhile to apply for a new one before your trip, for peace of mind and to ensure you won't have any problems if your flights are delayed.

You can confirm the validity of your ESTA online and apply for a new one if needed.

Note that the validity of your ESTA only covers when you are allowed to enter the US; it has nothing to do with how long you are allowed to stay in the US. Each visit under the Visa Waiver Program is normally limited to 90 days and is subject to all the usual rules.

What if my ESTA expires during my trip?

As long as you received an ESTA authorization to travel, you do not have to reapply during the validity period. If your ESTA expires while in the United States (U.S.) it will not affect your departure. It is important to PRINT a copy of the document for your records.

Can you travel on ESTA until expiry date?

Your ESTA will usually be valid for a period of two years or until your current passport expires, whichever date comes sooner. Within those two years you are able to use your ESTA for multiple visits to the US as long as you do not stay for longer than the 90 days that are permitted under the terms of an ESTA.

How long do you have to leave the US before returning on an ESTA?

Therefore, the length of time of your total stay, including the short trip, must be 90 days or less.

Do you need to update your ESTA each time you travel?

There is no need whatsoever to update your ESTA each time you go to the USA within the two year period it lasts for. It even says this on the application form. The address of your new accommodation will be collected in the Advance Passenger Information everyone has to supply to the airline before travel to the USA.
