Driving around Banff, Canada in late December

Driving around Banff, Canada in late December - Aerial Photograph of Road

I'm planning on driving in late December 2017 around the Banff/Lake Louise/Golden area. (Nothing too crazy in terms or roads or conditions, sticking to main roads where possible, checking the weather before driving etc).

I've read in a number of posts that snow tyres are recommended.

Is this correct, or do normal people just happily drive with normal tyres?

Best Answer

It is not mandatory in Alberta. (I really wonder about that, seriously)

I would never drive up the moutains without winter tires; even on regular roads.

It is not only about snow, ice, it is about temperature, regular tires are not meant for cold temperature and will loose tracktion as it come down below 5c or 6c.

You never know when snow or sleet or freezing rain can start falling and you do not want to be unprepared.

Just get winter tires; and if you are renting a car, ask to have winter tires.

Is December a good time to go to Banff?

The best times to visit Banff are June to August and December to March. Nature lovers will want to get to the park when the weather is warm and welcoming (and while the hotel rates in town are at a reasonable level). The skiers, however, will want to vacation in the height of winter.

Is it safe to drive to Banff in winter?

The highway to Banff (and Lake Louise) is well cleared and fine for winter driving. Your Passat should do just fine - 4WD is overkill and often leads to a false sense of safety. It is more important to have solid tires and drive safely for the conditions.

How busy is Banff in December?

December is one of the busiest months in Banff, so be sure to book your hotel well in advance. If you can't get a hotel in Banff, check out the nearby town of Canmore which has more hotels. Canmore is also a great destination in the month of December with lots of events and things to do.

Can you see the northern lights in Banff in December?

The aurora borealis can shine any time of year, but they are best from October to mid April when the night sky is at its darkest. Generally, the northern lights in Banff shine their brightest during the winter months of December to February. Your best chance to see them is on clear nights with a new moon.
