Cruise lines and targeted demographics

Cruise lines and targeted demographics - Aerial View of City during Daytime

I've never been on a cruise before, but I'm thinking of taking one sometime. I can't really tell the differences between any of the major cruise lines. Can someone break down the differences between the major cruise lines roughly in terms of targeted demographics (e.g. families with small children, seniors, young professionals) if any? Or perhaps distinguished by quality of amenities and service?

I realize there may be some personal opinion to this, but if cruise lines are anything like hotel chains, I think they can be objectively differentiated (e.g. Motel 6 vs. Best Western vs. Hilton).

Here are some major cruise lines to consider:

  • Carnival Cruise Lines
  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Princess Cruises

What is the target market of Carnival Cruise Lines?

Carnival Cruise Line identifies their target customers as those who like to "Choose Fun" and live life to the fullest. Carnival Cruise Line has a broad consumer appeal, attracting families, couples, singles, and seniors and carrying nearly one million children each year.

Who are the target markets for the river cruises and ocean cruises?

Based on the above criteria, some of the most common major micro-markets include singles, families, affluent consumers, the senior market, baby boomers, ethnic communities and special interest groups.

Who goes on cruises statistics?

So who exactly goes on cruises the most? Well, the average cruise passenger is 47 years old. While the average cruise passenger is 47, they only make up 15% of that demographic. Younger passengers like the Caribbean, as the average age of that passenger, is 43.
