Connecting time at JFK

Connecting time at JFK - Young frowning man in suit and glasses looking at wristwatch while waiting for appointment sitting at desk with laptop

We have an International flight leaving JFK at terminal 4 (South African Airways) at 11.40am... and our connecting flight arriving on Delta arriving at 8.55am at Terminal 3 (there are 2 of us travelling).

Will this be enough time to make the International Flight or should we reschedule?

Thought'd I'd post what happened as an answer...

When we arrived at Durham/Raleight Airport (this is where the connecting flight was leaving from) we mentioned that we were flying on to South Africa from JFK at which point the attendant, after inquiring about the time of the flight out of JFK said we must have our luggaged booked through to SA - which she did - she even had to go downstairs to retag our luggage as it had already been sent by this time - and we didn't have to worry about the luggage at JFK. We had loads of time to spare...

So if you ever need to connect via a separate flight then tell them where're you're going and ask them if they can book your luggage straight through.

How much time do I need to connect in JFK?

Leave at least 90 minutes for connections that require travel between terminals. You will be required to go through security. If your connecting flight leaves from a different terminal, simply follow the purple 'flight connections' signs and take a free flight connections bus that will transfer you between terminals.

Is 45 minutes enough time for a connecting flight in JFK?

But 45 minutes at JFK (even same terminal) for domestic to international flight, I would never consider this. If your incoming flight is just 10 - 15 minutes late (and that is still ok), you miss your connection.

Is one hour connection time enough in JFK?

2 hours is plenty. You won't know until the day of the flight if you'll have to change terminals, but even if you do, you'll make it with time to spare (with the usual "as long as your first flight is on time" caveat.)

Is 1.5 hours enough for connecting flight at JFK?

Re: 1.5 hr long enough layover at JFK? No, that is not nearly enough time. It can often take an hour just to get through Immigration and you may still be waiting for your luggage (and have to go through Customs, check in for new flight and then go through security again) after your ongoing flight has taken off.
