Compare train ticket prices in Britain

I'm looking to buy some train tickets for travel in Great Britain, but I know there are many train companies in the country. Does there exist some kind of website that allows me to compare the different companies, given a certain route I want to travel?
Or can somebody tell me which company I should go to? I'm planning to travel from London to Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Also, is it cheaper to buy tickets in advance or in the station? Is there a price difference?
EDIT: Does the time of day and the day in the week make a difference?
