Cheaper price ticket for UK railways with contactless - Illustration showing credit card functions for different payments

I am planning to travel from Gatwick airport to London and after checking in the Google Maps it suggested to use Thameslink or Southern railways. As I tried to book the ticket online, there is a information saying that paying on the spot with contactless (debit, credit, or Oyster) will be much cheaper (7 Pounds vs 11 Pounds). Is it really true?

Is it cheaper to use contactless on trains?

You can add money to an Oyster card or use contactless (card or device) straight away. You only pay for the journeys you make and it's cheaper than buying a paper single or return ticket (train companies may offer special deals on some journeys).

Is it cheaper to use contactless or travelcard?

As a general rule a Travelcard is more expensive than an Oyster card or Contactless payment card. The exception is if you make 3 or more journeys for 6 days or more within a 7 day period. In this case a 7 day Travelcard works out cheaper than an Oyster or Contactless payment card.

Is contactless cheaper on underground?

We went out onto the tube, and made identical journeys using the two different methods of payment to prove what happens, and show you why the fares are different.

Are contactless and Oyster the same price?

1. Re: Oyster card or contactless payment, same price? Yes, it's the same price and daily capping applies. Note that 7-day capping only applies from (I think) Monday to Sunday, so a Wednesday to Tuesday wouldn't be capped.
