If I buy an Amtrak ticket from say Pontiac, MI to Chicago, can I get on the train at Detroit (three short stations down) if I happen to be closer to Detroit at departure time?

You can only take the train for which you have been issued a ticket for. If you wish to depart earlier or later, you will have to cancel and re-book your ticket, if your fare conditions allow this. Once you have done this, you can then choose a new departure time for your ticket.

You need to change your ticket before you board and pay any fare difference. Yes, change your ticket ahead of time. I have been using the Pacific Surfliner for a "long, long" time and occasionally over the years jumped on an earlier train without changing tickets.

You're allowed to walk about the train as often as you'd like. Just make sure to watch where you're walking onboard the train between cars. The safety plates often shift and pinch when the train is in motion.
