Can a US citizen with criminal history apply for a Canadian temporary residency permit? - USA flag on blue sky

So there's this seven-day Alaskan cruise that I want to do. It departs from Seattle on a Tuesday and disembarks in Vancouver, Canada the next Tuesday. I figure I'll just take a taxi from the port to the airport and will, all in all, spend just a few hours on Canadian soil. Once at the airport I'll either fly back to Seattle or to my home state (Texas). I haven't decided which one I'll do yet.

The problem is... I have a criminal conviction in the US which could cause problems per https://help.carnival.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1403.

I can't apply for Individual rehabilitation as discussed at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/inadmissibility/conviction.asp because my probation ended less than five years ago.

It seems like a Temporary residency permit might work but it's hard to say. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/inadmissibility/permits.asp talks about eTA-required countries and Visa-required countries? I checked and the USA is not an eTA-required country and I don't think it's a Visa-required country either. Or is that not what the website is saying? Maybe the website is saying that altho most US citizens wouldn't need to apply for a Visa that I would?
