I am planning my trip to california (USA) this Spring.

A long time ago I remember my dad using a traveler check in Florida - is this still a thing that is used in the USA as a tourist?

I remember that he could use them to pay the bill in a restaurant or even get cash at nearly any place.

I'm considering not carrying lots of cash around my 3 weeks trip. Are checks still considered to be a good thing and are they still widely accepted?

What replaced travelers checks?

Prepaid travel cards, branded with major credit card logos such as MasterCard or Visa, are arguably the most direct replacement for traveler's cheques. Available at banks and retail stores, prepaid cards allow you to load a designated amount of money onto the card and then use it as a debit or credit card.

How are travelers checks different from regular checks?

A traveler's check is similar to a regular check because it has a unique check number or serial number. When a customer reports a check stolen or lost, the issuing company cancels that check and provides a new one.

Where can you use travelers checks?

You can usually cash travelers cheques at banks, currency exchange bureaus (bureaux de change in some countries) and at American Express travel service locations. Some larger hotels and other businesses still accept them, too.
