Are live leeches allowed through TSA checkpoints?

Are live leeches allowed through TSA checkpoints? - Unrecognizable vocal artist singing in recording studio

On the most voted answer on What techniques, tricks or otherwise have you used to get upgrades on flights?, there was a comment about leeches:

Though if you're a doctor of 14th century philosophy, you should probably carry some leeches with you just in case you're called upon to provide medical assistance to a fellow passenger.

While this is obviously a joke comment, it did get some interest in whether live leeches are allowed through flight checkpoints. Since (surprisingly) no one posted this since it was asked in 2011, I thought I'd go ahead and post it.

So, what is the status on live leeches and the TSA?
