Following up the discussion on size limitations for checked luggage on airplanes, I would like to ask your experience on the following:

What happens if your suitcase meets the weight limitation of the airline, but exceeds their size limitation of "Length+Width+Height = 158cm"?

Example: This suitcase by a known brand with a length sum of 175cm.

Best Answer

Personally, I've never seen airlines reject (or charge more) for a bag being slightly too tall. They only check the weight and move on. Now, if your checked baggage is obviously much too long (eg. skis) then your item will have to go to the special handling area. I've travelled in North America, Mexico, Europe, the UK, and South-East Asia if that helps at all.

Do airlines enforce checked baggage size?

They usually don't, unless it's just bad luck. A few years back, I had bag that was measured at an airport in the US, by a rookie agent. It was about a couple inches more than the size limits, cost me $150 on the spot.

What if my checked luggage is oversized?

Can You Bring Oversized or Overweight Checked Luggage? If checked luggage is over 62 linear inches or over 70 pounds, most airlines will let you bring it anyway. However, you'll have to pay the oversized or overweight luggage fees, which can get fairly expensive.

Can airlines open locked luggage?

If your bag is unlocked, then our officer will simply open and screen the baggage if any item alarms. However, if you decide to lock your checked baggage and TSA cannot open it through other means, then the locks may have to be cut. For soft-sided baggage, this process will not damage your zippers or zipper pulls.

Is there a restriction on suitcase size?

Though you might find an inch or two of a difference with various airlines, the standard domestic carry-on luggage size is 22" x 14" x 9", which includes the handle and the wheels. This size limit ensures your bag \u2014 and ideally everyone else's \u2014 will be able to be stored safely in the overhead bin for your flight.
